After a road trip of about 400 miles I started to hear noises from the engine. Im pretty sure it's the timing belt. It now happens every time I start the engine. Does this mean I should replace the belt asap? Also, I bought the car with 186,000 and now it has around 207,000
Thanks for your help
Timing belts don't make noise really unless they are shredding and rubbing against something. Could be anything. Take it to a mechanic if you are not sure.
Yeah thanks No, I didn't ask the guy when I bought the car, stupid me. The belt seems to be in good condition , I checked the timing and it's not moving around. I also was thinking it may be the water pump but I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Do water pump make noise when going out?
I adjusted the alternator belt and it seems to have stopped.
But as I was trying to adjust the alternator with a bar, I accidentally cracked the housing :x Is this bad? The crack isn't too big.
If you do not know for an absolute fact that the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner were replaced within 60,000 miles of now, do it right away. Otherwise, you are just playing Russian Roulette with your engine. Could be fine, could throw the timing belt and smash your valves into your pistons and put holes in very expensive things.
Usually the only noise a bad timing belt makes is a "whuffle" as the pistons move up and down with some of the valves stuck open. Or possibly some smashing noises.
Replace all belts ASAP. You should do that whenever you buy a used car. You'll probably find the noise while you're in there.
