$2 CRX Seat Repair n upholstry, better than rips n foam snow

Postby JeffWilliamsUSA » Tue Jul 19, 2016 11:42 pm

Materials needed:
1- t-shirt
2- nylon twine
3- spray glue or needle n thread
4- your old seat insert
5- scissors

Pretty simple really.
Trim your Center insert with one inch of bolster material around the edge. Then fold the bolster material over and glue it or sew it to give a finished Edge to insert
Tie long pieces of twine to the metal wire in the insert.
Cut off the tabs on the back of the insert.
There is also a small slotted fabric you could put a string through instead of the Big Tab. It's right beside the Big Tab
Stretch the T-shirt over top of your seat back.
Tape your string to the end of a Sharp screwdriver
Then put the strings through the T-shirt and tie them to one of the metal pieces in the back of the seat.
In the photos I only have the top of the insert and the bottom of the insert attached. I didn't use the strings in the side or the tabs. It's kind of in an unfinished state but you can get an idea of what it will look like

And hey it's better than yellow foam snow blowing all around in your car LOL.
Anyways some photos

lol, looks messy but , just to show the process

Well, the important thing is that you like it. For $2 bucks, though, it's pretty impressive. And McGuyver is starting up in the fall on tv, so it's timely as well.

This isn't the long-term solution, though, is it?

lol, yeah it was definitely a MacGyver thing.
And that's funny the TV shows coming back on haha

Yeah, I needed to have seats in the car and they were taking up room in the house. And I couldn't stand looking at that orange ugly foam for one more second so I just had to do something
It's just a quick fix for cosmetics and to trick my OCD LOL.

I considered trying to save the center Fabrics and repairing just the bolsters. But once I got into it, I can see the fabric was just rotten from age

Also when you look at the parts of the fabric that were never exposed to the sun you see the actual color of the center of the seats and it's actually quite colorful. It's not that light drab blue that we're all familiar with.

I also considered trying to find mint blue DX seats. But again the fabric would be rotten.

My plan is to take my SI seats for my 91 and have them recovered with dark blue and light blue leather to match the door panels.

Just a few days ago I learned of an upholstery place I'm going to go check it out in a couple weeks.

I would highly doubt that there would be any OEM seats in good shape anymore, at least in the US. But good luck on your search!

It just sucks that we get a combination of lack of remaining OEM seating combined with a floor pan that doesn't lend itself too well to aftermarket seating fitting either. If you're not tracking your car, then re upholstery is definitely the best way to go. It's truly an art, though. Send the seats down to Sue in Dallas! (Gas Monkey reference)
