Search function

Postby denko1030 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 1:40 pm

I really have enjoyed this site. Lately trying to search I keep getting "word is too common". I do not know how else to search for transmission threads. That is only one example I have had other searches do the same thing and I have no idea how to search for something that specific. Other than that this is a great community and happy to be a part of it.

Thanks

The integrated Search function is rubbish, that's why we put the Google search bar in the banner.

It would be nice if you could disable that sack of [crud].

The only problem with disabling the integrated search altogether is that it kills the whole Search tab on the default (glacier) board style. Without some custom code that means no access to the other useful links in there. I know you're using cs_red, so I removed it from your account just for you.

Yeah....didnt matter to me I use the google all the time... just thought it would be better for newer people who get discouraged when using the wrong search function.

The only search I use on this site is the advanced search from the menu. I would be disappointed if that went away.

Yeah I agree with msc, I use the integrated search exclusively. It is much much better than the Google one. You cannot limit searches to certain forums, only search topics, posters, etc with the google one. The integrated search looks better, shows post date, author, etc and allows searching within search results. The main problem is that you cannot use certain search terms because they are "too common". I would say remove the google search and fix the too common problem with the integrated one.

Its much better if you fix that. Google gives you less information about the posts (context, poster, # replies, # reads, etc, as I outlined above) and more noise. The only problem is not being able to use certain search terms, fix that and the search is better in every way.

Another example of a bad default search function.

jfro could you please disable the "too common words" from the phpBB search? I think the solution is to lower the common word threshold and then rebuild or recreate the search index.

What it gave me way more than that, also that is a bad thing to search.

Did you click on topics vs posts? I used the advanced search.

"Motor" is the bad thing to search. We're not driving electric cars, though, our valve covers say "Honda Motors".
