Re: Mugen Spoiler brackets?

Postby JeffWilliamsUSA » Sat Nov 19, 2011 10:50 pm

well i just build my first prototype from these measurements and .. er ..
one of the measurements for the secondary bracket is .. er .. wrong ..
There is no way this is 13mm :(
Image

It's deeper than the 15mm primary bracket .. ;)
My guess would be around 16-17mm outside dimension

See .. it says 13mm .. hehe ..

Image

ALSO: .. i have another problem, :(
The mounting surface on the wing isn't level and when the secondary bracket is mounted on this un-level surface it doesn't mate with the primary bracket squarely.
AND .. it seems like the wing needs to be shaved in places where it mates to the hatch.
It only really touches in the middle :? ..

Should i shave that down little by little till everything touches ?
we're talking 1-2mm .. there is a small hump in the center and there "was" one hump i already flushed that was just on one side.

It sure would be nice to get the secondary brackets in place, double side tape the wing, stick it on
and then install the clamps on the sides .. this is my first experience with any wing install ..
all help & suggestions sincerely appreciated .. Ka-HeLp .. hehe

BTW: didn't feel like dragging out the drill press & heavy clamp so .. er .. some errors.
I think i'd lower those set screws 1-1.5mm but maybe it's my angle too ..
The next ones will include alterations based on my observations building this first set.
anyways .. pretty pics are mo-better .. so .. enjoy ;)

The problem is your wing is a replica....the Mugen one is made from a mushy foam like material.....

daveb91 wrote:The problem is your wing is a replica....the Mugen one is made from a mushy foam like material.....

Yep exactly :(
Well that and , i can't find a Mugen wing .. and after my daughter saw the CF in person,
she loves it .. :/ .. sure would be easier to install a Mugen :(

And body work is probably my biggest weakness here ..
I was commercial electrician for over 10 years , i got the electrical stuff down
I've always worked on my own cars and i'm good with tools .. but ..
body work is a different animal .. ahhhhhh .. lol

I was hoping someone with more experience than me ( which is any experience at all .. lol )
could offers some "TiPs" ..
eg: how to build up that mounting area so that it's flush , shim it ? , epoxy resin ? ( we have lots of epoxy resin layin around ) ,
** most importantly **
Should i be "shaping" a new install ?
Is this common ? Do those gaps do something ? ( drain water er w/e )
I'm talking about the mating surface that actually touches the glass.

RE: lining up the secondary brackets. How To ??
It's really hard to get an "actual" center point to measure from. Seems like they could have put a small center mark in as part of the mold :?
I don't want them so far inward that the primary clips don't engage
Or .. too far outward , which would stick out and not work either

I guess this is a 3 person job ... lol
2 holding each side and one guy marking and measuring ..

It will be a lot easier after i make the larger "correct" size secondary clips.
I can slot those and move them without re-drilling.
The small ones would have been a "one shot deal" drill it wrong and i'm screwed.
so yeah .. larger secondaries on the drawing board ;)

AND .. er .. didn't mean to hi-jack the thread , this appears to be a "for sale thread"
i guess i need to make a new one in the modifications garage .. oops  .. My Bad .. In my defense i just searched and replied without looking at what forum section it was posted in.

Yep sure :-)b
They only sold the material in 4 foot lengths so i should have enough material to build about 5 sets
These will work , but i'll tweak future fabrications just a bit more after learning a few things from this first build. eg: lower profile screws, and experimentation with the angle and a few other small enhancements.

( plus i'll break out my drill press & large vise for better accuracy & construction speed )

Here's a little something something i built , getting ready to build another one soon
Remote controlled pan-tilt - kevlar belt drive - 3 axis micro balance adjustment -
It even has a rack & pinion on the z plane slider :)

Guys..

Sorry about the time frame on the brackets..I know its inexcusable..with work being crazy and all..but I will call my machinist guy and kick his rear and get these out as I'm sure he has stalled on me.

I will post an answer in the next couple of days.

Ok so after a loooooong hiatus I got the brackets back from this guy... :rolleyes1: Oy vey what a debacle! .....Guys....I apologize for this guys lack of enthusiasm and making you guys (my crx loving bretheren) wait so long.
So here goes...I have a few sets back, but I have to finish them(drill proper holes, make final adjustments)...Ok so as it stands now who do I "owe" a set of the "u" brackets to?

I have 2 complete sets of stainless brackets with hardware that will go up for sale once I finalize them.I also have the stamping dies for the U brackets..with this I may have enough stuff to cover the owed U brackets and maybe 3 sets of stainless mugen brackets.
