Why is USPS Parcel Post so slow?

Postby sxysweed » Tue Feb 14, 2012 11:50 am

Why is USPS Parcel Post so slow? They estimate 10 days for my package to get from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Atlantta, GA. Sent it yesterday evening, it's already in Jacksonville, so what do they do with the package for the next week? When it's sent Priority or with UPS, it only takes two days for the same trip. Hell, I've shipped thing priority to England, and it took less than a five days.

The say 10 days estimated just in case, usually itll be much quicker. But like dave said

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/new ... 888405.cms

main reasons imo:
-emails is up
-letters and pen pals are down
-bills can be done via autopay and over the phone
-ups/fedex is much faster/efficient

Why they couldnt have seen this at least a decade ago? Who knows...

Same reason why flights have a healthier on-time percentage these days; you set the bar low, and magically, you meet expectations. :-)b

As for the deficts of the USPS, as clearly written in the article, the biggest problem is the prefunding of 75 years' worth of retiree costs over a 10-year span. No business would be able to last under that burden (and none have been asked to). Of course, the decrease in volume doesn't help, either.

I'm pretty sure they over-estimate. Though I've never sent anything parcel post (I've received) I've never had anything in the mail for that long.

Parcel post is the cheapest way, what do you expect? Sometimes priority mail is not much more, but it is very weight and size dependent. I agree stuff usually gets there faster than they estimate. The trucks hit traffic and bad weather it takes longer.

Fedex carries US mail so you need to wait for the post office to bag up the mail and then for Fedex to pick it up and process it.

That makes things make much more sense.. My wife's been buying a lot of Forever 21 laterly; it ships via FedEx but comes in our mail box... Weird.

But still, why does Parcel Post take so long? Seems like it would cost more to have so many shipping methods..

Yeah same here, I bought my clipless pedals and shoes and the tracking number was a FedEx number but the mailman delivered it. My Garmin cadence sensor showed that it was here but it didn't get delivered till the next day.

Yes, but just from post office to post office.

Fedex should not be using mailboxes.

If you have a PO Box, you can sign up so the Post Office will sign for your package and then put it into a locker so you can get it at any time.

I just got my paperwork last week, dunno if there is a charge for it.

Fedex still needs a physical address to ship to. Make sure to use the post office address with the PO Box or it won't get there.

parcel uses an antiquated system relying solely on ground transportation. it remains a legacy for shipping items that are up to 70 lbs or hazardous material (like stuff that can blow up and take down a plane). if you are shipping the typical ebay package or other online item with parcel, over Priority, to save a few cents, youre a [potty mouth] idiot. if its the person sending an item over parcel, theyre a [potty mouth] idiot.

Priority is awesome. its cheap, their flat rate covers a lot of different scenarios and best of all its really quick. quicker than fedex or UPS. their boxes are free and actually easy to use. most of the times when i bother to look at the price vs parcel, its literally pennies difference. im guessing they price it similarly to discourage anyone from bothering to use parcel unless they have to.

Last I ordered something, yesterday, fedex would not let the seller ship to a PO box. That's why I pay for a private mailbox service, life is a lot easier and totally worth it.

Fun Update.

Stuff I sent was "delivered" like five days ahead of schedule. But the person/company it went to never received it. Filed a claim with USPS, was denied. As soon as I get my letter for why it was denied (USPS will tell you online that it was denied, but won't tell you why..), I'll be appealing the denial.

I'm pretty sure I'm screwed though for my $300.
Maybe the company I sent it back to will be nice and give me a discount on a set of projectors.

I dont understand what happened. Did you have proof of delivery? It costs like 80 cents.

If you have proof of delivery then paypal will base it solely off of that.

I bought products from TheRetrofitSource (aka TRS). They shipped super fast, got my stuff in three days. Projectors didn't in my headlight housings, so I sent them back to exchange them for another set of projectors. But TRS never recieved my stuff, so I can't file a claim with PayPal.

Package I sent had insurance for $300 and delivery confirmation (but not signature), and was sent parcel post. It says delivered on USPS's website, but TRS said they didn't receive it. Filed a claim with USPS, provided documentation to prove the stuff was worth over the $300 it was insured for. They denied the claim.

Oh so you got screwed because they were doing and exchange...

Well that is really a freaking joke imo... pretty stupid if you ask me. On their part, not yours.
