J2-ReX 88 CRX HF Superior Blue w/ GSR >Axles Shifter Trans<

Postby JeffWilliamsUSA » Tue Mar 08, 2016 5:50 am

Hey all, un-believable , i'm on my 3rd CRX
In my defense, the first one was my daughters,
the second one was a parts car "gone right" ( it just came together )
BUT .. THIS ONE .. this is the one I searched & hunted for.
I really liked the Superior Blue and blue interior. I also liked the 88 style seatbelts / door panels.
The trick was to find a One Owner , Rust Free , Perfect Interior project shell.
I literally searched the entire east coast all the way to Canada ( and even inside Canada .. lol )
I also searched LA / Cali , since my daughter was near there .
FINALLY , i found my car , and not too too far away .. just outside Atlanta GA.

Image

I put together a little slide show ,
I'll post the link and then click the lil icon marked below.
IF it doesn't load Full Screen right away, pause the slideshow by clicking anywhere on the screen , click your back button on your browser , click the slideshow icon again , ( don't move your cursor / arrow )
I titled it "FuNVieW" because it's fun to see the before and after pictures and it's kind of a story in pictures too.
It's FUN :)
it's about 4 mins so grab a beverage and sit back and enjoy :)

Here are a few photos that are not in the slide show.
Ever seen one of these: Original Showroom window sticker ;)
ImageImage

It was Soooo Dirty .. you can see why it took me so long just to get a "basic" cleaning done.

Image

And a little shot of a wire tuck in progress

Image
Hard to believe it looks like this now :)
Image

The DS is done except for attaching the ground block & soldering the timing jumper

Image

and , Passenger side ready to go ( gonna try tonight )
Image

Gonna Tuck this lil guy too .. the wiper motor

Image

Remember this ugly thing ? .. kinda pretty now, right ?
I had to cut one wire that looped back in and re-solder it.
Then i ran the back wire around and under the motor and joined it back into the main wires.
Extended the wires , and heat shrinked it up, I also chopped off the L & unscrewed the bendy clamp.
Image

PS tuck harness prepped and ready for install:
BTW: the reason this took so long, i'm SO Dang OCD, i couldn't put "home depot" wires in my CRX.
I "had" to go to the junk yard, pull 2 headlight / PS harness' from an 88 hatch & 91 hatch.
and i basically got 5 wires from that for $15 .. lol .. but hey , it's all OEM and the right colors / sizes. ;)
Image

and the harness is back in the car :) lots of soldering to do

Image

Wiper Motor installed. Got a few scratches working in the dark  guess i'll have to hit it w/ a lil touch up paint ;)

Image

YaY :) .. the "cerimonial" LAST WIRE photo :) ( well, it's the last fender well wire .. lol )
I had to clamp a piece of plexi to my stool so i could get in real close.
I guess i could taken off my wheel and get in closer, next time, but the clamps & plexi was a quick solution.
Image

and ... DoNe :)
The wires pointing up , going into the top hole, are A/C wires. There is no "tuck tutorial" with A/C :(
I'm not sure where i'll mount the relays, maybe in the stock location or just below it.
The A/C wires will be routed in their own loom. The wires wouldn't have fit into the current loom anyway.
It's pretty tight with everything thats in there now. Might go through the top of the fender frame for A/C.
There was a nice tapped hole for the lighting relay, i'm fairly certain the tab is for mounting only. I don't think it serves as a ground. The relay has wires for grounding. ... right ? Ground block will go right next to the relay.
I hope my corner light clears all that
Image

Got my 2 post motor mount installed , no pics , sorry but i have other pics :)
I didn't really want to remove all my trim to paint it but ..
i had the fenders off , so that one is easy and .. gee :rolleyes1: so much dirt :(
Image20160314_063703 by Jeff Williams, on Flickr

Man , i hope the metal under all my trim looks like this :shock; :)

Image2016-03-14_07-12-12 by Jeff Williams, on Flickr

I sanded the rust spots where the fender tabs meet the body.
there was no actualy "rust spots". it was just rust embedded into the black stuff honda puts under every screw on the fenders. the fender tabs caused the rust and will need to be more vigorously sanded.
i also washed every single part of the front fender support.
Um , this might be the before photo haha , but you get my point

Image

> Ok well Everything from the firewall forward is clean :) .. time to start on the interior.

D'oh  .. that was easy .. :)
well not actually "easy" , it was pretty nasty / dusty. and there was either oil or hydralic fluid on the PS
I hope it was a spill and not a "drill" into the brake lines .. i don't think so .. i think spill ..

Image

It was just logical to do the rear bumper / rear panel next. get it out of the way
It was pretty clean with only the tiniest rust spots on the corners where the bumper cover rubbed against the metal.
You can't even see it in the photo .. it's on the outer corner / kinda on the side.
I had rust on the top rail of the rear metal bumper ( surprise surprise )
It's fairly bad on one side but i think it's salvageable , at least the rust is stopped from spreading.
I'll have to paint it with a rust inhibitor because sanding it down flat , would basically delete it .. lol
anyways , i'm knocking out this stuff that's familiar to me because it's easy / cheap , just rags n soap n sandpaper ;)
anyways .. photos r mo-better ;)

Image

Ok, whew , i removed the DS door protector trim and i'll never do that again .. lol
broke one center clip and the dang front clip
Since there was very little dirt & zero rust under the drivers trim, i'm not taking the PS off
Anyways .. kinda sucks i broke those clips but i'm kinda happy about finding no rust
and here are a few photos :)

Image

Image

PaiNTiNG PaRTy :) .. your invited :)

This was the hardest part i've ever had to photograph  lol
The paint is really "glassy" and "curvy" which makes it hard , but there are also a few specks of actual dust and some pitting reflecting the white clouds floating above. This part is pretty easy to acess, i might replace it with a perfect one in the near future.
Image

i think it's a lil boring but , Since D was asking about my bumper painting / condition .. sm pics

you can see the right side is nice n shiny, only rusted on the top sheet metal fold channel
Image

but this left side , YiKeS  you can see how dramatic the transition is from rusted to , kinda ok.
If this left side wasn't so bad this would have been completely savable. :(
There might still be hope , i don't know .. open for suggestions ..

Image

So ,, that's not enough painting for you , you say ," dude you said this was a painting PARTaY !
Well then ... lets have MOOOooRRReeeee more photos :)

Well, it's certainly messy enough to be called a successful PaRTaY
Image
Nope, I did NOT paint it inside the house .. lol just carried it in quickly before the evening dew set on my work.
Image

and ... WOAH .. i've heard of four on the floor but .. a door on the floor  lol
WE TURNED THE HOUSE UPSIDE DOWN !!
and LooK ! , a CELEBRITY ! ,
Cousin IT from the Adams Family is bringing me the lighter i lost :) how nice of him :) haha
Image

I didn't want to risk any breakage of clips on the PS , just wanted to undo the plastic nut and slide paper behind the trim for painting ( that's pretty easy way to prep for paint btw ) and
DAMuT if i didn't snap off the stud of the plastic nut > i'm a nut" d'oh lol , i twisted it and it twisted the stud off :(
.. trim and I just don't get along .. lol

LAST TeaSeR PhoTo ... :) .. STaY TuNeD for the Un-Veiling :)
Image
AND ... BaM ! .. back to black
Image

Modified the HF rear plastics for cargo divider, can i cut a hole or WHAT .. :)
In the photo on the Right, you can see the little marking on the speaker frame as a template for the holes.
And you can also see that the holes line up perfectly with the cargo divider bracket :)
Image Image

I also did a little weight reduction .. lol
Recognize this stuff ?
Image Image

Much cleaners and balanced left to right , to me , it's how it should look
Image

Funny stuff .. :eatfly:
Here are 2 things i wont miss .. ;)
Trim Paint - BTW it actually took 3 cans , i had to go out and get a 3rd one for the front bumper.
I asked the PO if the stereo worked .. he said Yup , I'm sure he didn't know his speakers looked like this.
He installed a new stereo head unit for "better sound" .. oops .. wrong item to upgrade .. lol
BTW: can you guess which speakers were installed in the front ? haha ..
Image Image

BTW: if your wondering .. hey Jeff , what happened to the PaiNTiNG PaRTaY un-veiling photos .. :yell:
... there coming .. dang tree pollen has my car covered , i'll have to wash it for a proper photo ..

Ok so ,I installed the rubber boot into the firewall and I added my ring connector to my power wire and connected alternator and power to the Main Fuse box
Image

I couldn't resist mocking up the Fuse box and the carpet to see how it might look when its done ..

Image
Look Ma , No Hands .. or uh , no screwdriver prop .. hehe
Image
Since others were asking about this .. a lil closeup .. i gotta extend that one connector wire , and re-position that fusebox branch a few inches. and sweeten up the positions of the branches / tie wrap etc
Image

Kinda looks like this from the passenger view point
You can barely see that lil hump in the fuse box IF the Lid / Cover is used.
You can't see it at all without the cover / lid.
Image

And just when you think yer almost done .. you open the hood n see THIS
Image

Got a few "GooDiEs" in the mail :)
I used to consider this "JDM BLiNG" but .. every OEM bolt was rusty and causing rust.
The Stainless bolts are STRONG , i had to cut one and nearly burned up a dremmel cutting wheel

Image

LoVe THiS :) .. those OEM rusty bolts were so VERY annoying to me
Image

Image

Here's an item that got missed at the painting party

ImageImage
ImageImage

AND .. we'll be JaMMiN SooN :) i'll be ready :)
ImageImage

Put in a Radio / CD / MP3 player ( connects to my phone / Pandora too :) )
Image

And just to give you an idea of how REALLY DIRTY this car WAS ..
eh ... i missed a spot .. lololol
ImageImage20160522_044500 by Jeff Williams, on Flickr

Painted my Door / Window arches
ImageImage

And , picked up a Hasport A/C Bracket & a New / ReBuilt Compressor
Image
The steel attachment hardware is bent up, my friend picked it up for my in VA and i'm waiting for it to be shipped.
I need the bolts & stand offs and maybe the metal bracket too.
I called Hasport and they said i could get the hardware kit for $39 plus shipping ..
maybe i can bend the metal bracket back in shape & find bolts & spacers but if not .. i have a plan B

Also .. wait for it .. wait for it .. TODAY WE STARTED THE ENGINE !! YaY !! :)
May 22 , 2016 :) .. startup day

I've decided to keep this first page for cosmetics and use page 2 for mechanical / suspension etc.
I'll keep updating page one .. and creating / adding to page 2 ..
Ok .. enjoy the pics ..

Re: J2-ReX 88 CRX HF Superior Blue w/ GSR swap in progress

Postby JeffWilliamsUSA » Tue Mar 08, 2016 7:23 am

:)
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
Ok .. now for the stuff i really liked about this particular CRX.

1- O-M-G .. one key .. for everything !!
actually i got 2 keys , both keys are identical and the actual , original keys from Honda that came with the car new. One key fits both doors, ignition , trunk / hatch .. and .. wait for it .. YEP , the SECURITY BOX TOO !! :) .. and the trunk lock actually works when you turn the key. haha
My 91 key fits when nothing is attached , then when you attach everything ,, key don’t work .. argh

2- The Original Window Sticker from the Honda Showroom Floor was in the glove box
3- Interior was MiNT :) .. well seats sucked , and rear plastics are faded ( might heat treat them )
4- CRX Floor Mats .. yeah baby .. :Austin Powers voice: .. lol
5- No visible rust at all .. finding little light rust in the ordinary places. under fender tab / bolt etc
6- The sound the door makes when closing it, gee , it sounds like a Mercedes or some other new car. solid.
7- This CRX was "last name" titled by the first owner as "Williams" and now .. it's still a Williams :)
8- The port of entry from Japan to USA , Jacksonville Florida :) , my home state ( Tampa , FL )

RESTORATION PROCESS:
So, i got started.

one of the first things i did was just to basically clean the interior and a “basic” cleaning of the exterior.
Pretty sure the previous owner NEVER detailed this CRX. :(
The kick panels and the door crevices were just covered with caked on dust , oil & plant life
Ok well it wasn’t “living” plants but lots of dirt , leaves & sticks.
Kinda went like this: ( > symbol, indicates sub-topic )
1- Interior trash-out & initial basic cleaning.
2- exterior basic cleaning - mostly black trim stuff and the sides / hinge areas of doors & hatch.
3- remove the dang front tag - ick , hate the front tag thing
4- the front lip was bumped coming off so i reconnected it
5- cleaned the wheels with soap & water , abrasive cleanser, steel wool “very gently” and sparingly..
6- cleaned the trunk area , came out really nice :)
7- trashed-out engine bay cruise ctrl, washed and detailed removed few things on the clutch pedal too.

Thats great Jeff!!!!! I was working on mine today...glad I didn't start a slide show with mine....first few pics would have been of my foul mouth regarding a previous owners attempt to cut corners with the electrical system...But hey...we wouldnt do it if we didn't like the torture. dliverance wrote:I'm still fighting with the seller of those mounts to get a return. Mine didn't fit at all.

he told me that nobody else said they didn't fit .. i thought maybe you just didn't complain.
But now i know it was an outright lie. Especially if i contact him now. I told him i'd keep them just to wire my motor and maybe a "partail" refund was the answer. I just asked him for $20 .. it was kinda like he ignored my suggestion.

I really can't tell anything till i get my transmission. I thought i had one locally but i guess it sold. :(
it's gone from craigslist.
I installed the drivers side mount and i need to remove the rear tranny mount T bracket to bang down the crossmember.
It seems like it's pushing forward on the motor mount. and it's the wront T bracket but , eh wasn't it you that mentioned i could cut the webbing in the T-bracket ? anyways .. i'm not sure how critical that detail is.
The drivers side mount puts the motor VERY close to the frame rail on the crank pulley.
If the motor moved back a little , the crank pulley would be in the wheel arch and be fine.
It's my first experience with this and i don't know how it "should" look

I don't really plan on keeping those mounts. I just needed something fast n cheap for the wiring and first fire-up.
plus i'm keeping my eye out for used ones that come up on ebay or CL.
My next purchase will be an ECU. That should put my part list pretty close to complete for fire-up.
I got a little side-lined with the detailing. I had the fenders off for the tuck, and said "might as well pop these trim pieces off for painting ( cuz i got duplicolor bumper coat too :) ) and DANG !! 2 things , 1- there was SO MUCH dirt under them , and 2 there was virtally zero rust in the square holes. that was just too much of a teaser for me. haha i had to remove the back trim ( kinda easy too ) but .. had to remove all the interior to do that .. so
ofc i had to clean the rear interior under all that plastic .. lol .. ( see photos )
and since that was done, it was logical to remove the rear bumper and clean that and restore the rusty bumper.
BTW: all 4 trim pieces had zero rust in the square holes :)
what do you think vegas odd are on my doors having no rust under the trim ? .. lol
I love my CRX :) .. haha ;)

I really want to have my ECU here before i start my final wiring.
I want to include the vtec wires in the main bundle of the engine harness so it looks neat when it goes into the engine bay. BUT .. i can't do that until i know where it will be placed comfortably with just the right amount of slack for it's placement.
And, i still have to solder the wiper motor extension & re-pin the engine harness / connect all that up
I think i have a starter wire to extend and eh .. main battery , and .. sensors .. i think that's it .. i'll have to check.

What did you ever do with your main fuse box ?
ALSO : Can you offer tuning suggestions ?

i'm not sure how to answer all those questions for my ecu tune ..
eg vtec engage / 2 step / enable o2 / etc
Im just building an moderately fast daily driver that might get some autocross in , maybe.
I've never even driven any crx with vtec before or any vtec anything for that matter
... lol .. yup , i'm a vtec virgin  .. lolol

So much to cover here lol.

My fuse box is still in the bay. I have been working 60+ hours a week so I haven't had much time.

Running the vtec wires in with the main harness will definitely be a nice touch. I'm not sure about that t bracket but I wish I would have heard sooner that you needed one since I practically gave one away last week.

I don't know what your rockers look like but I'm deathly afraid of the day when I remove my plastics. I just know I'm going to be pissed.

Yeah, i'm a bit "wordy" .. lol. I'm trying to work on that , haha.
I found a great place to put my fuse box. And i don't have to cut it in half :) .. lol
It fits great under the fan housing. One Tab will screw and i made a velcro strap to go around the middle.
I might put some velcro under the other side or make an L bracket for the other tab on the fuse box.
I did have one "lil mess up" where i didn't think about the routing of the "plug-in" connections on the fuse box.
The big 4 pin one will be fine, lots of extra wire. but the small one that goes next to the ELD might be a bit of a stretch. I plan to take it into the other side in the same fashion that it entered in the OEM configuration. Just above the slot for the larger wires. If all goes well , the lid will fit n everything. Will look nice n OEM'y .. :)

AND: Rust Report .. all panels removed .. all rust spots mapped, just tiny spots and the back bumper top metal strip, which is almost always rusted. But i've wire wheel brushed that and painted it and it will last till i can find a flawless one. only about 10" of the top sheet metal was rusted off on the DS. A lot of it was pretty solid.

Gee, wish i wouldn't have missed the T Bracket , doh. oh well .. next time ;)

make sure you use a rust inhibitor on those spots. Like ospho. And please post pics of the new fuse box home :)

Well i hand brushed with a wire brush & sandpapered , then disolved most of the remaining rust with vinegar.
then worked it best i could with a wire wheel drill brush
It was getting to the point where chips were flying off ,lol, so i had to stop.

and ... it might rust , but it won't be on my car when it does .. lol ..
This car has virtually zero rust and i'll find a rust free bumper to match ;)
I just wanted to stop the "rust soup" from draining all over stuff that doesn't have rust on it.
and .. finally , .. if i'm gonna get cut on it .. at least it won't be a rusty metal cut .. ;)

The fusebox isn't there yet.
I've trimmed a few parts off one tab and the tip of the triangle on the back of the fuse box.
I've fit it and logically laid out the wires.
I need some #4awg to go to the main fuse box before i can get a final fit / wire it all up.
( i have some #8awg that i thought would work but from what i'm reading .. it needs to be #4
which i don't have :( .. )
and .. i need a little 3/4" split loom , ( just threw some away 2 nights ago , doh , thought they sold 3/4" at HF )
I kinda didn't want to use old , brittle dirty loom material anyways.

The down side to that placement is:
you'll have to lay upside down in the floorboard to change fuses .. ( or count n feel method )
but .. how often do you have to change one of those fuses anyways ..
and , if you have to change the fan unit, you'll have to drop the fuse box and maybe disconnect a few wires.
I think it will swing out of the way, but i'll only know after i try it , you know those dang fan units .. :yell: lol

ok .. i hope to get some of my trim painting done today so i can get back to the motor.
STaY TuNeD .. more to come ;)

#8 sounds about right for the stock wiring and there is no benefit to up-sizing the wire for a stockish system.

How much 3/4" split loom do you need?

OH gee Mike , thanks so very much, you just saved me about an hour of my day :) :-)b
and a little money too :-)b :-)b :-)b
and that #8 will work better in tight spaces.

And i think you'll really like my fuse box placement , the "whole" fusebox .. lol ;)

RE: 3/4 split loom , actually i hope 3/4 will be big enough .. some advice here , what do you think ?
This is where i am :

Image

One the left side my boot contains my sensor wires & VTEC subharness wires.
My next move is to push the engine harness in with the power wire needed for the fuse box ( thanks again )
QUESTION: I'm connecting Main Fuse Box to the starter connection , right ?
My plan for battery is frame rail mount, hopefully in the fender space. but it will definitely be on the frame rail.
RIGHT side i've already put those A/C wires in 1/4" split loom ( running behind the fan motor )
** Those exposed wires next to my - strips-o-handy-tape ( lol ) are for the fan - OEM i didn't do that .. lol, will correct
I'll put those 3 large fuse box wires in some 1/4" split loom and loop that around the back of the fan motor.
They will terminate closest to the PS side of the fan motor.

AND : here is where i need the larger split loom
The main wires with the 3 plugs for the engine wiring harness. it's too big for 1/2"
Pretty sure 3/4" would be good enough for those wires .. maybe
NOT SURE that big main bundle will fit in 3/4"
the one that goes from the main body harness up to the engine plug branch. It's just about 12" - 14"
AND: i'll need a bit on the engine side , just because i want it to be "new" split loom
that's probably about 14" as well. But .. i think that will be the 1-1/4" ?? < advice needed

ALSO: in the photo , that branch facing down with the engine harness plugs will be "flipped" upwards.
then looped back towards the termination point as close to the boot as possible.
I'll flip it under the main bundle so the twist force will naturally keep it nice n tight to the firewall.
You'll also notice i removed those "rain boots" since i probably won't have any rain in that location .. lol ;)
The wires were routed out of the side of those boots too, not so great for the tight space / neatness etc.

Ok well .. thanks again .. looking forward to your advice & comments.

Thanks :)
I "just" finished painting the front bumper.
Not sure if it was painting burnout but, gee that was a pain
but .. it turned out pretty good :)
My front bumper has a considerable amount of pitting from road debris , it's the best it can be for 25+ years.

I can't get pics today , the friggin trees are oozing pollen and it dusted my car completely. :(
what a buzz-kill .. lol
i really wanted to stand back and say .. in my best Austin Powers voice .. YEAH BABY .. :)
but .. i guess that will be later when i have time to wash it down .. lol

I still have to put the DS side lower skirts on.
and none of those plastic screws are back in yet ..
debating just getting new ones or putting stainless screws with the plastic anchor ..

Not sure if those replacements on ebay are brittle cheaply made or a nice replacement.
If anyone has ordered these please let me know how you liked them ..
ALSO , kinda thinking about the "bolt replacement kit" i've seen on ebay .. it's like $40 ..
even if my plastic clips n stuff are all there , they seem to be brittle and cracking ..
EG; the windshield cowl screw inserts .. those are all cracking .. one shattered and fell down into the wiper hole. :(
anyways .. this is where i'm at .. i'll post some photos soon
thanks agian ..

and oh .. BTW .. i need some comments so i can get a "Page 2" to start a new photo section.
Page 1 is getting kinda photo heavy ;) , not such a big deal with fast cable speeds but not everybody has cable.
I'd like my build thread to be mostly a photo documentation / story in photos. with the top of each new page being a photo section.
I think it would make it more fun to view the build & reflect on my progress. ( motivation :rolleyes1: , lol )

So .. post me up some comments .. i think i need 25 to start a new page

I see you spent $15 at the junkyard for wires... I thought if it fit in your tool box or pockets it was free!

I did fit some in my tool "bucket" ;) .. lol
I used more than 5 wires too, but the 5 i really needed were there, for headlights / horn.
They are a larger gauge. and oh .. i also got a free horn too ;) and a bolt for my crossmember :P

I ended up being able to use the "bucket" wires for my tuck.
And i have a full DS tuck harness ready to install in someone elses CRX :) ..

Also, as i went through it, the condition has caused some delays of my original finished projection date.

PLACEHOLDER - First Page Wrap up - I'll update this to summarize the first page of photos.
Not really sure if i'll start a page 2 the way i intended but it seems "polite" to spread the photos out a bit across a few pages. Page 1 is pretty photo heavy. I have "amazing" cable speeds here. I really can't tell how long of load time page 1 is with all the photos.
anyways .. i thought it would be cool / fun way to make a build thread that's "easy on the eyes" and on your internet connection ..
Ok .. thanks ..
