Headlight bulb compatibility

Postby Yochanan777 » Mon Mar 27, 2017 5:40 pm

I have an 89 DX. I can't find compaitible headlight bulbs.
The 9005 and 9006 all have a raised 'nub' on the flush mounting base of the bulb that doesn't allow the bulb to sit deep enough for the mouting ring to tighten. I think my only recourse is to grind off the raised nub to allow it to sit flush.
Any other ideas?
Down to one working headlight. 9005 or 9006 bulb not compatible without modification.
Thanks.

How can you not find bulbs?
88-91 US model cars use 9006 for low beam and 9005 for high beam.

You can re-read my post. Both the 9005 and 9006 are completely available. They just no longer fit the CRX. They added 3 nubs to the mounting surface that causes the bulb to stick out far enough so that the locking ring will not turn and lock over the top of the bulbs. The original bulbs have a flat surface without the three nubs . What I'm going to do is grind down the raised nubs with a dremel tool to make them fit.

I don't need to reread your post because it's not logical.
You're telling me, after all these years, all the types of cars that use these bulbs, they have changed a bulb design, retaining the same model #'s, to no longer fit older model headlights?
OK, sure.
Either you have the wrong type of bulbs, or you're not pushing them in far enough, which I have had that problem before with gunk building up within the socket lock on the headlight.
It's not an issue with the bulbs, it's the person installing them.

Relax. Find another forum for your hostility. I'm not going to argue with you.
The bulbs have been re-designed. You are not helping.

Sanity check. By 89 DX I assume it's a USDM car.

Does it have stock OEM headlamps? These can be identified by the markings in the front glass. Should have "STANLEY" written vertically on the edge near the center of the car. You should also see the bulb specifications HB4 (equivalent to 9006)in front of the low beam (outer) bulbs and HB3 (equivalent to 9005) in front of the high beam (inner) bulbs.

What brand of bulbs do you have?

You should not have to modify a bulb for it to fit. After confirming you have headlamps that should accept the bulbs you have look close for exactly what is preventing the lock ring from turning. There may be curd in the track or the mounting flange may have distorted by heat. With out the bulb in place does the locking ring turn smoothly or is it gritty?

I don't need to, but when you start off with this...

Then expect it.
What you're saying is not logical.
They're not going to redesign an older model of bulbs to NOT have them fit the older headlights.
You said your car was an '89 Dx, which is a US market car, so if you're car has North American market headlights, which I can only assume it does, 9005 and 9006 bulbs are the standard bulb for those lights, they are the same bulbs used in 90-97 Accords and 90-01 Integras'.

Go to a mechanic?

Makes no sense, sorry. Just changed my bulbs today. No issues.
