Trade negotiations at a dealer

Postby zrickety » Sun Aug 09, 2015 11:48 am

Tossing around the idea of a used Golf R and went to look at one relatively close by. Low miles and a great price. Discovered it was heavily modified which was good except for a bad vibration with the upgraded clutch. I ultimately walked away but it was easy when the appraiser finished with my 09 GTI at 115k miles. I sold my crx for more. They offered me $2500 for this car

Leather, bluetooth, xenon, loaded. I know it could use new tires but that was below the belt. I got them up to $5500 as I was walking out the door.
Comparable dealers sell them for $9k up.

I have sold 3 cars to CarMax in lieu of a trade in. You will still take a hit from CarMax but no where close to a dealer trade in. If you are looking to just get out of the car, it is a good deal. Leave that day with a check and you don't have to buy anything from them. Takes about 30 minutes of your time there to get a price.

I'll keep it in mind but basically decided to keep this unless my wife changes vehicles. Then I remove a few parts and slide into her big turbo 2010 GTI.

It was my friend's car, he bought it new and went APR stage 3. He was going to trade it last year on a 4Runner and the dealer offered him $13k. He spent more than that on upgrades, so we scooped it up and sold the Mini Cooper that my wife wouldn't drive. I know VW doesn't have a reputation for reliability in this country, but both of ours are near or past 100k and no complaints!
