I got another crx...kinda ;)

Postby importcustomx » Mon Mar 21, 2016 3:40 pm

Hi Guys,
Long time honda guy, built a few CRX's (featured on here), EP3's and others along the way. Always wanted a del sol and this one fell into my lap. literally.

Tow truck arrived and we unloaded it. Didnt run, looked just like this in the first few pictures. Its essentially a typical east coast [crud] box. Lots of potential in my eyes though. could be a real fun project car. I am doing this basically just as something to do. Something that is [crummy], and make it pretty again.

First on the list was the actual cleaning part. See what we are dealing with and go from there.
So i broke down the interior, gave it a good once over. Ripped out the seats.
Cleaned the interior was pretty simple.

shop vac, stiff plastic bristle brush, Folex (available at lowes), Chemical guys fabric cleaner and some time. about 2 hours.
Gave it a decent vac, then i sprayed folex and chemical guys fabric cleaner on everything. carpet was pretty moist to the touch, not soaked but damp. i then used my plastic brush and agitated the entire carpet. then took a towel and wiped the entire carpet down. Vac'd it again to pick up everything i just loosened up, and then one last chem guys fabric spray down and wipe up. Then boom, super clean carpet time.

next will be the exterior getting a little compound and polish.

And that is the official before and after above :):)

Next was to work on the door. This door was toast, creased and damaged..just junk. I had a donor door that i picked up a few weeks ago. It was in much better shape. So its time to swap everything out of the old door and into the new one!
Ripped off the fender, underneath was actually pretty clean. no real rust. Sprayed some rust stuff under there to help prevent anything further..or at least slow it down for a little bit. Wire brushed it pretty good, wiped, then sprayed.
New doors have power mirrors, so i swapped out the harnesses etc so hopefully those will end up working, i think ill just need the switch for the drivers side door. also replacing the drivers side door. but that will be later in the week. maybe sunday.

Now for the car not running, that was the fun part.
So after dumping in about 3 gallons of fuel and then realizing that it eventually went all over the floor, i realized 2 things. I need a new gas tank..and some kitty litter.
First thing i did was toss a new fuel filter on there. Cheap money and will ensure this puppy will run good and no obstructions. Also when you remove it noticed that fuel was coming out, so no blockages there.
Next was the battery, it was toast. Instead of buying a 160$ battery, i hunted around on advanced auto parts site...got myself a deal. i am member or points member whatever. they had some special...save 20% off your entire order. So right there that and the core saved me a bunch of money on the optima. Done! and its a HQ battery. plus when i do a remote mount later on, it will be a sealed one too. so essentially an extra 10$ more than a generic no name battery from Advanced. Score.
Now that the fuel and spark issue was fixed, it was time to check a little more. Replace the spark plugs only to find oil in the tubes, that calls for new valve cover gaskets and tube seals..done.
Toss in the new plugs, painted the valve cover wrinkle black again.

Toss more fuel in the car, try and start it..no go. for about 10 minutes of playing with it, some carb spray, leave the gas tank cap off and try starting it now..fires up! its alive! Took it for a late night cruise around town. Drives fine, little bouncy due to the knock off crap suspension parts. Soon to be replaced with all Skunk2 Parts.

All of my vehicles have had skunk2 stuff. Never 1 issue. 4 sets of suspension componenets(lca's, pro-s, pro-c coilovers, tie bars, strut bars etc)

Here is some before and after action.
All i basically did was a quick pressure wash, hand wash, clay bar (or clay mitt in this case) and then i used a meguiars cleaner/polish to get rid of the spraypaint/overspray that the clay didnt take up, and got the factory paint back to a slight shine. came out pretty decent :D:D
no wet sanding etc, i dont think there is even any clear left to do that. previous owner rattle canned it and it came out terrible.

Quick update. Replaced drivers side door.

Got the fuel tank situated finally.

Got some actual fuel straps instead of the half ass stuff that was there before. Hvac strapping.

While under there i actually used some rust converter waited a few days and then undercoated it. Sound deadening and hopefully help her last a little longer and hold some of the rust down.

She fired up instantly without hesitation once i buttoned everything up.

Next is a gunk out engine flush and oil and tranny fluid change. - Done

Then suspension. Gotta refresh the whole front end.
Then convert rear drums to calipers.
Then in between fix or patch rust...then probably just wrap the car.

That's the thread.
I'm using Chrome, but I see nothing posted from Gotin.
The last post on there is from jaiw11@aol.com on Nov 02, 2011.
