What fits with 15” 949 wheels and 91 EX knuckles

Postby Mitchyz250f » Mon Apr 03, 2017 4:42 pm

I know this has been discussed a thousand times before but got to make sure before throwing down the big bucks. I’m building a forced induction k24 a2 and hope to make approx. 340 whp. It’s going to be my daily driver so it will never have brake pads that squeal. I’ve had them before and can’t deal with it. My car has 91 civic ex knuckles. So here are my questions.

1-I read that 225 45 15s on 949 15x8 6UL (36mm os) wheels with -2.5 degrees front and 2.0 degrees rear camber if you roll the fender.
-Is that correct?
-Will that combination work with my EX knuckles?
-If that combination doesn’t work does going to 15x7 solve the problems?

2-I’ve read that by using 94-95 Legend GS (2pot) or prelude Vtec Calipers (with the caliper carrier from those respective cars) and Cooper Mini (non S) rotors will all bolt on yielding 11.0 brakes?
-Is that correct?
-Does it work with the EX knuckles and 949 rims and if not does going to re-drilled Prelude Vtec rotors solve the problem?

3- What is the correct rear brake setup to match the fronts, proportion valve (4040) and master cylinder (15/16)?

We run that size tire (Hankook RS3 soon to be RS4) on the race cars. Both cars are running 15x8 +25 Enkei classic wheels. Both cars have ~2 degrees of camber in the front and the fenders are rolled. One has EX knuckles and brakes, the other has regular Si knuckles with a Fastbrakes adapter, GSR caliper and Corrado G60 rotors. Good luck finding brakes that don't squeal and actually work. Both cars are turbocharged (one is a D16 the other is a B18) and make about the same power you are planning for, you'll work the hell out of the brakes if you're beating on it.

Both cars have 90-91 Si rear brakes and OEM 7/8" MC. I prefer the smaller MC for the pedal feel, but that's really your preference. Both cars have adjustable aftermarket prop valves and complete custom brake hoses, but the one with EX brakes ran a 4040 and a stock valve previously, we balanced it by testing and playing with pad combinations. Your needs may vary, our cars are usually racing up an incline so the braking needs are different than a street car or flat tracker.

Thanks, you have answered all my questions regarding master cylinders and proportioning valves.

But I would still like to know if anyone is running 15x8 949 rims with EX knuckles? Just want to make sure they don't rub.

Our wheels are similar size, you have a slightly higher offset but I think you'll be fine. On the inboard side there is easily 5mm of space and on the outside, ours fit so yours would only have more clearance.

downest, thanks again. I want to make sure I understand what you are saying. When I plugged the data into this online 'Rim and Tire calculator' that looks at clearances based on rim size/offset and tire size it appears that my wheel would move the 11mm (36mm -25mm) closer to the knuckle. If the clearance between your Ex knuckle and your 25mm offset Enkei wheel is 5mm I my have interference.

Sorry, I don't know why I was thinking 5mm. I will have to check when we get the cars out of storage, but I believe there should be enough space.

My experience tells me you'll have clearance problems trying to fit 8" wide wheels with a +36 offset. You may need spacers. +25 is the correct offset for that wheel width.

EX knuckles are the same as regular civic knuckles, FYI. Its juat the tabs for the brake caliper spacing is different.

I thought the bend was different. Am I wrong?

There are pics on this page:

No significant difference. The only reason the Ex knuckles are desirable is the brakes.

For 225 45 15s mounted on 7" rims is the correct offset still 25mm?

7" rims still want 30-35mm offset. It's when you get past 7" that you need to lower it.
I got a new shell, just need to stop driving the DX so I can work on it.

I've got a filter for my mouth, it just isn't a good one.

Ideally you're around +38mm with a 7" width.
