update me on cellphone tracking of a car

Postby jzxcrx » Thu Oct 13, 2016 6:03 pm

Ive looked into it in the past, to see if there's a device I can hide in my car where I could track it's location by GPS if it ever got stolen. The answer was there needed to be an antenna that might need to be visable to a satellite, and therefore to a thief who could then circumvent it.

Is there any updates on this type of security, using a cellphone to track the device by GPS?

I'm not up on the latest "technologies" to say the least.

Amazon. I got mine for $35. You send the device a text, and it responds with the car's coordinates, speed, and direction. No fancy websites, no monthly fees, just you and your gps talking via text. A cheap sim card with a limited text plan is $5 a month. Mine has a built-in battery backup that is good for about 4 days. Peace of mind.

I got three different prepaid sim cards, but eventually settled on the $5/month unlimited text pay-as-you-go from T-mo. Prepaid has all but gone away. All you need is to send and receive texts.

Yeah, that $3/mo T-Mobile SIM is your best bet in the US right now. Twilio is rolling out an IoT SIM card product with even better pricing for this use case - they're actually running it on the T-Mobile network. It's $2/mo per SIM and then less than one cent per message sent/received, vs. $3/mo per SIM and 10 cents per message sent/received after the first 30 per month.

I would use Ting.com for the service, you can get cheap phones from them. They sell old school phones that last a week or so on a charge. Add a USB power brick, and you are good for a month lol.
Obviously now we have iphones and android phones, so you can just use the native 'locate phone' services built in instead of GPS.
