15" or 17" on a CRX?

Ok, I run 16s, I had 205/45/16 and they fit, had a bit of rub turning, but not bad at all, just made a little squeak at a certain point in the turn radius... I now run 205/40/16, these are short tires for their width, so you're effectively getting the same size as a 15 with a larger tire. These ones don't rub. The ride quality isn't too bad, but not too great either, however I'm more performance minded, and I like a shorter sidewall because one of my big pet peeves is feeling sidewall flex when cornering. Anyway, heres a couple pix 4 ya.

I have 205/40/17's on my 91 Si. Yea it rides a lil rough. but they look good and corner awesome. that's with stock suspension!

i love 15s best size for a crx hands down. i also like 13 civic vx rims with some fat tires on them

just got some 13" vxs powder coated white on my black si and they feel alright.

i think most members agree that 17s are just a little on the big side for a crx. at least no ones tryin to throw 18-20s on em! lol

15's are perfect...throw some 175/55/15's or some 195/50/15's on some 15x7's in a decent offset (+25 in rear, maybe +10-ish in front) and call it a day. 17's look ricey and aren't really necessary on such a small car

Hahaha im gonna be putting some 175 55 15s on my 15x7s in a bit, not low offset wheels tho. I work at a tire shop and some guys will be buying tires for his smart car soon so just gonna [potty mouth] around with his old ones

I went with 205/40r/16s call me crazy but I couldn't tell a difference in ride from my 15s, I actually think it rides a little better

i don't think you're going to get much of a ride difference just changing wheel/tire sizes. it's the width, offset and actual tire selection that'll make or break your ride quality...someone could have some 15x8's and say it's awesome and then someone else could have 15x5.5's and say it's not that great compared to their 17x7's or something...it's really hard to say what the best size/setup is, but I like my 15x7's just fine. I think anything larger than a 16 on a CRX is goofy just because the car is so small and the rotors are also small...big wheels make them look more weiner like

Any time you increase tire width, increase tire pressure, or decrease the sidewall height you will increase the vertical stiffness of the tire and the ride quality goes down. This is a fact of the physics of pneumatic tires.

Seat of the pants ride quality evaluations are rather subjective. For meaningful comparisons there is specialized instrumentation and SAE standards for proper procedure.

I say 14, or 15 inch is the way to go. 16 might be ok, but its verging on euro tuner style. Not to mention performance will suffer. just make sure your overall diameter of the tire is the same, or your gas mileage will decrease, along with acceleration. 13 inch is the best for performance hands down, especially if you get a lower profile tire as it will have the same effects as a upgrading your final drive gear. Here is mine on 15's, sometimes I wish I had gone 14 or 13.

Also, because of this forum, I chose 17" with 205/40/17 tires. No complaints here. Not rough, does not rub, stock height to car. But I will agree, they look better with a body kit. Glad I have one!

i would do 15's. i was going to get 17's, but then i realized how big they are and i am going with 15's. if you do 17's i would upgrade your brakes, because of the rolling mass is greater. it short means your braking will suffer. i don't think you want your motor in the passenger seat?

it's YOUR car, so do what you want. however, you have to think of the physics and how your upgrades will effect your car.

ok heres a classic tip from back in the day,,,get yourself a baseball bat and a jack!!! jack the rex up so that you can fit the baseball bat between the tire and the finder now lower the jack just alittle,,,what your gonna do is roll the bat to flair the fenders this will help get a nice even curve and will help getting more clearance for bigger rims!!! just roll roll roll n lower the jack more and more with the technique ive seen civics and crxes bagged sittin on 18's even 19's,,,but ill caution you your forearms will be sore and if you flair aton itll look bomb but.you may crack n chip the paint

I prefer 15's. I have 16's for autox but only because they were cheap. My street tires are lighter and all season. The parts car came with 17's and it rode rough, you must have forgiving tires if they don't.

205/50-16 is too big. Use a 205/40-16 or 215/40-16 for 16" wheels.

I agree, I currently run 205/40/16, wouldnt go with any shorter sidewall... at all. 205/45 scrubbed on my ride a bit when turning.
