Best way to remove rust from tools?

Postby Vezionig » Tue Oct 22, 2019 7:30 am

I have monster of a wooden box I unearthed from a storage closet in my garage. Inside are some really nice (mostly Snap-On) vintage tools to add to my collection of my grandfather’s. I suppose these were his “to-go” tools for jobs outside the garage. Unfortunately, the roof used to leak on this garage for years until we put a new roof on it, and a lot of good stuff got ruined. All these tools have a nasty rust on them.

I’d like to know what’s the best way I can remove most of the rust off these tools. I read about good rust stain remover I was thinking maybe some kind of vat to dump them in to soak, but I’m not sure what to use. Any suggestions?

Enter "electrolytic rust removal" or "electrolysis rust removal" in your favorite search engine.

“The Works” toilet bowl cleaner works well. I use it alot.

Its like a couple bucks a quart, you can get it at Home Depot.
Leave the tools in over night and it should do the job. Then you can reuse the liquid for the next batch.

If you need to do a lot of derusting of large parts, electrolysis rust removal is the most cost effective.
