Starter housing cracked and broke !

Anyone ever see this ?
Went to start my 88 civic today and this happened ! :shock:
Its bitter cold here...

Do you think it could possibly have had a casting flaw or just the extremely cold weather? Or both?

casting flaw maybe ? extreme cold weather maybe... I have no clue...
