EW1-HF main/rod bearing size issues

Postby JayBirdy » Tue Jun 04, 2013 12:28 am

I have a 1986 HF model with an EW1. I am in the process of re-building the motor to stock for a fuel efficiency daily driver, but I'm at a road block. The main bearings and rod bearings on my block are a different size than what they should be for this model. I realized this after the first re-build kit I bought and the bearings were a completely different size. The journal diameters for my crankshaft are 1.653 for the mains, and 1.496 for the rods. However, everything I've found on the internet says the mains should be 1.771 and the rods 1.653.

I've searched the web and found one other person that had this issue but couldn't find an answer. Also, when I search for parts/bearings for the 86 HF, the D15A2 comes up. Seems to be a lot of confusion for this engine/year.

Has anyone ran into this problem with the journal diameters? What are my options, besides using the old bearings?

its possible your engine has been rebuilt before. if there is damage on the main cap surfaces, or on the surfaces where the rod bearings go a machine shop would undersize the crankshaft for undersized bearings. Thats what im suspecting has been done on your engine. Thats why you shouldn't buy block internals without first taking it apart and measuring. Just purchase the correct undersized bearings and you should be good to go. I would not use the old bearings unless you like taking your block apart.
Check out my build!

That sounds excessive for a ground crank. The normal crank grinds are .010, .020 or .030. This would be more like .100 or .200.
Perhaps an incorrect measurement, or incorrect specs for the engine, or a totally different engine has been swapped into place.

I come with 1.77 and 1.496 on a 1.3L and 1.967 & 1.771 for a 1.5L. The numbers you stated that your crank measured, don't show up in my books for any engine....

You are totally right about measuring before buying a kit. Lesson learned!

I got the car with 200,000 miles on it so I don't know for sure if it has ever been re-built, although it doesn't look like it has been. I've measured the crank diameters with a dial caliper and the mains/rods truly are 1.653/1.496 It doesn't add up but I have a few things that lead me to believe this was a crank that was used in the EW1.

Standard crankshaft company has this listed in their catalog:
1.5 4 85-87 EW1-HF Rod journal size 1.496", main journal size 1.653" Part# 8530B
http://www.standardcrankshaft.com/crankshaftkitcatalog.html?sid=4738
I've called them and they said that they were not able to find the crankshaft in their system. They said it may have been discontinued.

I also contacted Rons Percision Machine Inc. and after explaining my situation, Ron did some research and found that there were 3 different size main bearings used in the EW1. He said there was a 42mm(1.653), 45mm & 50mm. He has the 45mm and 50mm, but is not able to get the 42mm, which is the one I need. The other thing is that he has the 1.496 rod bearings for the EW1. He physically double checked and measured them for me, so they really exist. Ron also said that he has been selling EW1 rebuild kits for over 10 years and has never came across anyone who needed the 42mm main bearings.

This info leads me to believe that there was a different size crank that was used, but I have no idea why, and can't find any info on it.

Wow, they do list the 85-87 EW-1 HF as using a different crank than the 84-87 EW-1 DX.
I figured an EW-1 was an EW-1, though I knew the HF version was detuned a bit for better MPG. I just figured that was a difference in the cams used. I guess the smaller journals also contributed to the higher MPG, due to less frictional drag. Learn something new all the time......

6.25 years late but have the exact same issue. JayBirdy, what was the conclusion to this? FYI, from your increadibly helpful post, I ordered ITM 4B9453 (standard size) from rockauto.com for the rod bearings (not even going to mess w/ the main bearings) and praying they will work. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C ... A2LG&psc=1 lists the .10 version as 38"mm (which equals 1.496") and an ITM pdf lists it as follows:

4B9453 ROD BEARING SET
84-87 HON - 1342cc CIVIC, CRX 4 Cyl. OHC C.R.
10:1 74mm EV1,D13A2 Eng.1984-87
1987 HON - 1487cc CRX HF 4 Cyl. 74mm EW1 1987
85-86 HON - 1488cc CRX HF 4 Cyl. OHC C.R. 9.2:1
74mm EW1 8V Eng.1985-86

They also have a 40"mm version but that is not the same as 1.496".

Update on this, even the ITM 4B9453 is not 38mm (it's more like over 42mm). I am not sure why they advertise it as 38mm, which I cannot find anywhere! Does anyone know where I can get 38mm rod bearings for a 1986 Honda CRX/HF?

I ordered ITM 4B9453-STD from ebay (seller: importengineparts) who did a physical check of the size. The ones he had in stock were all over 42mm so he checked w/ ITM and sent me a pic of the new one ITM sent to him which is more like 38mm. Same labeled box, go figure. I have yet to receive so praying they will work.
I decided to change the main bearings and thrust washers too. I have yet to pull them out to measure their size but the ones they sell are all 45mm (unlike the 42mm listed in this post)... will know next week if this is going to be an issue too.

Good determination! That's what it takes to keep these rare cars on the road.

The new ITM 4B9453-STD from ebay (seller: importengineparts) is perfect! I suggest anyone w/ the same problem contacting this seller directly as he will know the exact part to get (from ITM). It's slightly wider but the oil hole aligns perfectly and is exactly the same as the original OEM that were taken out. For reference, my original rod bearing had a green mark and these new perfect replacements are 38mm wide and have "STD 1931 02SE97" stamped on the back. Also, this is the first time I'm replacing them (I am the original owner of this 1986 Honda CRX/HF w/ 325K miles on it) and I measured the thickness of the old and new rod bearings and they are pretty much the same... I guess I didn't have to replace them as I've maintained it pretty well.

I pulled the main bearings from my car and they are 43mm which confirms the 1.653 inches main journal diameter that the original poster listed. Issue is the main bearings sold by all manufacturers for a 1.5L or 1.3L version of my car (1986 Honda CRX/HF) list a size of "45mm" or higher. "D5I" is stamped on the back of my original/OEM main bearing. Would anyone know where I can get the correct main bearing for my car?
