Big brake Honda info

I wanted to post this as a resource for others looking to upgrade to a big brake setup using inexpensive Honda parts from the salvage yard.

Inexpensive way to have big brakes on your 88-91 CRX/ Civic

Needed:
Calipers and caliper brackets from a first gen Honda Odyssey or first gen CRV and many other cars but I don’t have a complete list but they are the same ones on the Acura ITR, good luck finding that in your local salvage yard. You are looking for the calipers labeled 17CL15VN and the brackets will be labeled either 23T or 25T, either will work. The 23/ 25 are the thickness of the rotor.
Rotors from 90-01 Acura Integra or 90-91 Civic EX, 92-95 Civic sedan (10.3”)
15/16” Master Cylinder – 90-93 Integra
4040 prop valve – 90-93 Integra or a 3540

You will need to modify the caliper brackets. Each one will need about 3mm machined off where the bolts go through to allow for clearance with the rotor. You will also need to cut some of it from the center of the bracket to prevent it from rubbing on the hub. I also had to grind about 1mm off the outside curved edge of the bracket to prevent it from rubbing on my 15 inch wheels but had no issues with my 14 inch wheels. Your wheel design may or may not clear without that modification. The machine shop charged me $50 to do the work on both brackets. This is hard to explain where the extra metal needs to come off but when you try to put the parts together you easily see the clearance problems.
You may also need to grind 1mm off the outside brake pad because this will also scrape on the inside hub. This might vary by pad brand.

This setup will add a bit more weight over the stock setup. Here are some weights of different components:
HF Knuckles – 14.2 Lbs (RH3-H/ LH3-L) (with bearings, hubs, and ball joint installed, 9.1 Lbs bare)
HF calipers (with bracket, no pads) – 5.8 Lbs
HF rotors – 7.0 Lbs (8.9”)
SI Knuckles – 14.9 Lbs (RH3-H/ LH3-H) (with bearings, hubs, and ball joint installed)
Calipers (with bracket, no pads) – 7.1 Lbs
Rotors – 9.0 Lbs (9.5”)
90 Integra Knuckles – 14.9 Lbs (RH3-H/LH3-H) (with bearings, hubs, and ball joint installed)
90 Integra calipers (with bracket, no pads) – 8.75 Lbs (17CL14VN)
90 Integra rotors – 11.0 Lbs (10.3”)
17CL15VN calipers w/ brackets from 1st gen CRV or 1st gen Odyssey – 11.5 Lbs

Believe I saw that post from 2008. Problem is that post is 12 years old and doesn't give any detail. EX knuckles are like hens teeth or they cost $200 each used. I just wanted to point out a way to get the 10.3" brakes with the ITR calipers and keeping your existing knuckles, sourcing the parts from a salvage yard and staying with all Honda parts for about $150 total is the absolute cheapest way to go. The first gen Odyssey and CRVs are a dime dozen in the yards so finding a good set to calipers is very easy.
Also I have not seen anywhere a listing of the knuckle weights.

Problem with that is those two models, the newest one is nearing 20 yrs old, that being the 2001 CRV and the 1st gen Odyssey ended in '99.
Neither are as easy to find in yards anymore, yet alone finding any Honda older than 2000 is getting tougher and tougher in salvage yards. Certainly in the 4 yards within 60 miles of me, 1st gen Odyssey and Crv's are NOT a dime a dozen.

Guess it depends where you are. Here in Atlanta I am always amazed how many I see. I am sure it won't be like that for long. I guess if it came down to it you could just get them from your parts store, although I don't know if the brackets would be available. I might pick up an extra set when I go next time.

In the rust belt of NY, you don't see that here. You'll see a few CRV's here and there occasionally, but seems like the Ody is a tougher find.
